Celebrate 60 Years of Excitement with Us! What Is the Economic Impact of a Home Show?

This year, HOMEARAMA celebrates the 60th year Diamond Anniversary. That’s 60 years of building homes, building community and building excitement here in Cincinnati. This year, to celebrate 60 years, the Home Builders Association of Greater Cincinnati is going to try something special.

For the ribbon cutting ceremony on June 8, 2023, at 10 a.m., we are inviting friends and all the members of the Home Builders Association of Greater Cincinnati, plus everyone who has been a part of the show for over 60 years in any way to join us. We will be lining up to form the number “60” and taking drone images to capture the event.

Details of How the Event Will Work

We are asking all attendees to wear white shirts, so we can more easily be seen from the drone. After the ribbon cutting presentations, we will all gather in the shape of 60 on the site at Martin’s Gate in Newport to capture this important moment from the air. We welcome all of you to attend and bring friends and family. Let’s celebrate 60 years of community.

What Is the Economic Impact of Home Building?

Home building generates local economic activity, including jobs and income generated by construction workers and new residents, and additional property taxes and other revenue for local governments. Home building produces:

New jobs in construction.
New jobs that support construction.
Income from those jobs funneling back into the community through local spending.

What Is the Economic Impact of a Home Show?

From the 1962 HOMEARAMA plan book or the first show, we find these fun retro facts:

The show was at the Millbrook development located in Finneytown.
“Better Living with a New Home” was the theme.
16 homes were on tour, priced from $28,000 to $39,000.
Interest on home loans was advertised at 5.5 percent.
Home styles included ranch and split level homes.
Glass shower doors were introduced as the “newest things in tub enclosures.”
Sliding glass doors were introduced as “picture windows that glided open on a track.”

From these fun facts, it can be difficult to estimate the economic impact, or the number of people or companies involved in all the roofing, cabinetry, flooring and many services that make up building a home.

Let’s fast forward to a recent year such as 2022. From the 2022 HOMEARAMA PlanBook, which captured the blockbuster 2022 HOMEARAMA show, we can see the following:

The show was in the Chimney Ridge neighborhood in Loveland, Ohio.
The theme was “Find More to Love in Loveland.”
Six luxury homes were on tour.
For each home, between 31 and 45 companies were listed as providers of services including items like landscaping, design, appliances, doors, flooring, cabinetry and more.

Roughly, that could mean that an average of 38 companies were involved with the building of each home. If we multiply that out by the number of homes in a given show across decades of home shows, it paints a picture of how beneficial and impactful HOMEARAMA is and has been to the Greater Cincinnati area over the years.

What Is the People Impact of a Home Show?

In 2022, over 24,000 people of our community got out and were inspired by the exciting HOMEARAMA 2022 show at Chimney Ridge in Loveland. There’s something thrilling about seeing the latest home improvement trends and designs that brings people together. From the custom craftsmanship of today’s top builders to the latest in amazing appliances, things that are new get people out to have fun together. The grand tradition of the single-site home show started 60 years ago in Cincinnati has had an incalculable impact on building community by bringing people together to enjoy an experience.
